A submersible pump is exactly that... a pump that must be submersed at all times.
Ideally these pumps should have at least 10cm of water over (on top) of the intake
of the pump... creating a load on the 'intake' ensuring optimal pump performance.
If a pump is 'just under the water' you run the risk of the pump pulling air through
the water and thus not performing as the manufacturer states in literature on the pump.
This is a pump that can pump submersed or operate in-line (out of water) without any performance loss or the pump overheating... under normal conditions as specified in pump literature of course.
